Why Goals Are Important And How To Get The Most Out Of Them

Why do some people work more than others and deliver outstanding performance? How is the highest possible performance can be archived by everyone? The answer to the following questions is motivation.

A reason that explains or partially explains a character’s thoughts, feelings, actions, or behavior.

There are various reasons for the existence of motivation. Some of them are:

  • Need for Achievement: a desire to achieve something. Examples of this type of achievement are solving complex problems, making the key decisions in difficult situations and just to do something better.
  • Need for Power: a desire to have control, influence and power over people.
  • Need for Affiliation: a desire to expand friendship relationships.

Furthermore, motivation inspires one to be constantly inspired and work hard. The basic way to use motivation as one’s competitive advantage is through the use of goals. Goals are simply performance objectives, which direct someone’s actions. Goals establishment is an important aspect of the motivation process.

To get the most out of motivation and goals establishment use the following guidelines, when ever you are setting up your performance objectives:

  • Establish specific goals: The goals, which are more performance orientated rather than general ones, such as “Do your best”.
  • Develop good commitment: People tend to work harder for goals they believe in and commit to accomplish.
  • Clarify priorities: Make sure the importance of goals are established so important goals would be accomplished at the right time.
  • Reward accomplishments: Reward yourself for doing things right the first time, so it would stimulate yourself to do it again.
  • Establish difficult goals: Realistic, attainable and difficult goals tend to lead to higher performance than normal goals.
