8 Reasons Why You Should Not Start A Directory

Whenever you read any articles, they most of the time cover only positive sides and never talk about something negative that might discourage you from doing that. For example, if you are reading a blog, that talks about proxies it will include only positive side of proxy making process as well as positive reasons why you should start your own proxy.

However, it’s always better to consider both sides, positive and negative, when you consider starting something new. In this article, I will cover eight negative reasons that you should know before starting your own directory since without knowing them you directory will be unsuccessful.

  • A directory is going to be your first site ever. The process of running a directory requires a lot of previous experience and knowledge. You should not only know the way web sites are built, operated but also promoted. In other words, you need to know how to setup websites, know or understand a couple of programming languages (html, php, css). You should also know the basics of SEO and link building.
  • You are busy as hell. A directory requres a lot of energy and time to be put in. So if you can not leave some time for your directory(ies), then you should not start it. You should spend a good amount of time on your directory(ies) daily. Directories require a lot of time and energy because you need to build, maintain and promote them. Some people spend more time, while others spend less. For example, Malcolm spends about eighteen hours per day on his directories while I spend only about one to two hours per day on my directory.
  • You want to start a directory today. Today is the period that is extremely close to the PR Update. If you will start a directory today and will promote it either using your time or money then there is no guarantee that you hard work is going to be paid off. So it’s not a good idea to start a directory right before the PR update since of your backlinks might not be fully indexed.
  • You have no passion for creating your own directory. Interest and passion is one of the main factors that will determine your success. If you don’t like what you are doing, you will never be successful in doing that, it’s that simple. If you find directories boring then you should not start them and move on for something that you find interesting.
  • You want to create directory only in order to generate a lot money. Your main goal in the process of directory creation should not be - to earn a lot of money. However, your main goal should be - to create something useful to users. When you build a directory that everyone wants to use and finds it useful then there will be a lot of opportunities to earn money. But if you create your directory that is full of ads and that is build for advertisers only then no one will ever use it and thus it will be unsuccessful.
  • You have nothing unique to offer to the directory industry. There are thousands of directories out there. Most of them look alike. So what makes you think that people will submit sites to your directory? Make a directory that stands out by having unique template, mods and good category structure. Or just offer unique way to sell links online. Always remember that the more unique your directory is going to be the more money you will be able to generate.
  • Directory’s domain name is not suitable for the directory industry. There are a lot of directories on the planet, which have domains like: crazytoys.com and asjflj.com or anything else that is not suitable for a directory to have. These domains, which don’t represent a directory’s name, raise suspicion amoung users. Furthermore, users start to think that you are not serious about your directory, and your directory is temporary and thus they will not submit any sites to it.
  • You have never read Directory Kit before. Before ever doing something you always should research, read and discover what you will be doing. So without visiting directory related helpful resources, such as Directory Kit, you will not understand directory business completely and thus might not be able to secede.

In conclusion, it all comes down to: resources (time and money), interest, passion, knowledge and experience. Without these things, you will not be able to build, maintain and promote your directory and thus you should not start it at the begging.

First of all you dont need to know how to setup websites, know or understand a couple of programming languages (html, php, css). As long as you have someone to do it for you, you are on the right track.

Dont do everything by yourself. You do what you are good at, leave the rest to the pro`s. I buy help with php when I need it.

You can start a directory when ever you want if you think 3-4 years ahead, not how to make a quick buck.
